Artist Statement:
The artist explores the various perspectives and societal views surrounding deafness. It prompts viewers to consider their attitudes and preconceptions towards deaf individuals, as well as the influence of societal norms on their sense of identity and belonging.
The medical view often focuses on attempting to "fix" deafness through methods such as lipreading, speech therapy, ear surgery, hearing aids or cochlear implants.
The social view highlights how society may perceive deaf people as disabled due to a lack of awareness, placing pressure on them to conform to societal expectations and norms.
In contrast, the cultural view emphasises the acceptance of sign language as a means of communication that is easily accessible to deaf individuals. Through sign language, they become part of the vibrant deaf community, where they feel accepted for who they are. Within this community, they have the opportunity to learn from deaf mentors and acquire valuable deaf strategies. This fosters a sense of pride in their deaf identity, allowing them to embrace their unique experiences and perspectives.
