Holding On

2021

silk, cotton threads

Artist Statement:

Red thread embroidered into white silk creates a picture of the Auslan sign of past, and the reflected image of this sign on the mirror creates the reverse - a general or international sign meaning future. These two signs are interjected by another sign - one half embroidered and the other reflected - which creates the Auslan sign of present.

The tangible silk and the intangible reflection on the mirror intersects to create a chronological boundary line, symbolising the present. The fragility of the red thread and fine silk material conveys the vulnerability of the language of the Australian deaf community, Auslan, which has been oppressed and suppressed for many years but has persevered throughout time to hold on.

Looking forward, we must reflect on the past and ensure we are never in this position again.
